DHA Algae Supplements–A New Method to Eat Your Veggies

DHA supplements are something a lot of health conscious folks are taking. DHA, called docosahexaenoic acid, is one of the all important omega-3 essential fatty acids. You must have omega-3′s in what you eat for good health. Unfortunately, you can’t make omega-3 essential efas in your body from other chemicals. You need to eat omega-3′s. Cold water fish and free-range fowl and other animals are a few good sources of DHA and of omega-3′s in general. But there’s a problem with eating all of that fish and free-range game. In as much as the fish is concerned, there’s the issue with mercury. And free-range fowl and other animal proteins can be very expensive. Also, there’s the difficulty of being a vegetarian. It would be great if you can get to the source, if you might just eat whatever the fish eat to obtain

You see our biggest source of omega-3 fatty acids is big, cold-water fish like tuna. The tuna get the omega-3′s from smaller fish they eat. Eventually, farther down the food chain, the original way to obtain omega-3 fatty acids is algae that grows in the sea. If you could just acquire the essential fatty acids directly from the algae, you could potentially skip the fish part. That works well for vegetarians. One more reason why this might be a really great idea is the big ocean fish often times have mercury and other toxins built up in their bodies.

There’s one special population group that this all affects more than others. That’s expecting mothers. You see, DHA is recommended for brain health in fetuses and also in young children. But expectant women are not recommended to eat lots of seafood, or even to take omega-3 essential fatty acid supplements, because of the condition with toxins.

Some companies make DHA supplements straight from algae. This is great for expectant mothers, simply because they know they can’t get toxins that might hurt their children this way. There are also some infant formulas out now that had DHA supplements.

In case you are not pregnant, or even female, there are a few other ways to acquire omega-3′s without eating seafood or other forms of meats. They come through walnuts and flax seeds. Eggs incorporate some DHA. Probably the best way, however, is to have a vitamin or other pill which includes DHA supplements.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Strokes

DHA supplements are so important to brain health as a consequence of all the omega-3 efas, DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid is the one which is most prevalent in the brain. Although numerous studies have not shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help cure Alzheimer’s, there is a link between getting the right quantities of omega-3 essential fatty acids in your diet and not developing Alzheimer’s in the first place. Not only has a link between omega-3′s and Alzheimer’s been found, but a link between omega-3′s and strokes exists, too!

The problem with omega-3 fatty acids is we can’t manufacture them in our bodies from other substances. We have to get our omega-3′s from our diets. This is a difficult issue, because our diets don’t contain the omega-3′s they used to. One big way people get omega-3′s nowadays is through eating fish, specifically cold water fatty fish. So, you should expect that folks who consume a lot of fish don’t develop as many problems like strokes as people that don’t. And usually this is basically the case…but not always.

In the USA, we have an area known as the “stroke belt”. This is a section of the South where stokes are statistically more widespread than in other areas. Specifically, the stroke belt includes North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana. What’s odd in regards to the stroke belt is people who live there are more prone to eat more servings of fish in a given week than folks in other places of the country. So, you would probably expect people in the South to have less instances of strokes, not more.

Scientific study has been looking into this. And have determined that although people in the South eat more fish, they are more likely to eat fried fish. Apparently frying destroys a number of the omega-3 efas in the fish. So, it’s not just eating fish that counts. It’s how we cook it.

Another issue might be the species of fish eaten. Omega-3 efas are much more usual in fish that come from cold, Northern waters. Fish like tuna, by way of example, tend to have a much higher omega-3 fatty acid concentration than fish from tropical waters. Additionally, farm raised fish of any species have less omega-3′s than fish caught wild. Fish don’t make omega-3 fatty acids. They get them from their diet. Additionally , the diet of farmed fish is usually deficient in omega-3′s.

DHA supplements are certainly something you need to consider, if you’re interested in avoiding cardiovascular disease. DHA is short for docosahexaenoic acid, and it’s one of the many omega-3 essential fatty acids. Omega-3′s are essential to good heath. Although DHA is the most prevalent fatty acid in the brain, it’s also seen to play a large roll in avoiding cardiovascular disease. Not only DHA plays this roll, but all omega-3 fatty acids are important when it concerns your heart health.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids and Cholesterol

One diet that is high in omega-3′s is the Mediterranean diet. Those who follow this diet generally have high HDL, or “good” cholesterol. One reason is the Mediterranean diet has a fair amount of fish in it. This is further backed up by the fact that Eskimos also generally have high HDL cholesterol. They also consume a lot of cold water, fatty fish. These fish tend to be extremely high in omega-3 essential fatty acids. You might not wish to eat halibut or tuna every day, but you can take fish-oil supplements. Numerous studies have shown that these supplements reduce triglyceride levels. In addition to fish, walnuts are recognized to be high in omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Blood Pressure

There have been several studies which have shown that diets high in omega-3′s or even fish-oil supplements, can lower high blood pressure. You don’t want to self-medicate, however. High Blood Pressure is a serious condition. Make sure you get your doctor’s approval before you do one thing.

Coronary Disease and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

It’s been shown time and time again that diets low in unhealthy fats and high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (including omega-3 efas) help prevent cardiovascular disease. There is a lot of clinial evidence that fish-oil, which is high in EPA and DHA (two types of omega-3 efas) help reduce instances of cardiovascular disease and cardiac arrest. In addition, fish-oil has been proven to have a relatively positive effect on lowering triglycerides, risk of death from coronary disease, stroke, and abnormal heart rhythms. Fish-oil has also been shown to help mitigate and treat hardening of the arteries through slowing the development of plaque and blood clots.

In other words, fish-oil, which contains considerable amounts of EPA and DHA, is really useful to you. Since with DHA you get a double whammy effect of helping your heart and brain, you probably want to consider DHA supplements in what you eat. As in all things medical, confer with your doctor first.

How A Fad Diet Can Hurt You

A fad diet is a fashionable diet plan that promises to help you lose weight more often than not in a relatively short time. A fad diet frequently attracts a lot of media coverage, which then attracts a large number of overweight people to try it in order to get back in shape. Fad diets are often soon discredited, but they keep raising their head from time to time.

The grapefruit diet was or is an example of a fad diet. People wanted to accept as true that you could lose weight solely by eating. The food in this instance was grapefruits, but there is also a cabbage diet. The trouble with these fad diets is that their slimming effect is only temporary, because you cannot eat only cabbage or grapefruit for the rest of your life, so the weight comes back as soon as you go back to normal.

‘If you always do what you always done, you will always get what you always got’ is a true saying. But what is worse is that a lot of of these diets can be injurious to your health.

However, do not think that fad diets are a new trend. Fad diets or fad medicines have an ancient history going back to fake witch doctors, medicine men and quack doctors who doubled as barbers! Fad practitioners have a prolonged and scandalous history and they are still alive and doing very well, thank you very much, today.

These days, medicine is too tightly regulated for them, so they have turned their attention to gullible, despondent dieters. Most of those that take up a fad diet are overweight teens longing to look like their favourite film idol.

Fad diets more often than not concentrate on reducing or completely eliminating carbohydrates. It is the low intake of carbohydrates that brings about the fast loss of weight. In fact, this rapid loss is due to the rapid loss of water that these low-carb diets stimulate. Much of the fat might still be there, so that when you stop the diet, your body re-absorbs its normal amount of water and the lost weight is put back on just as fast as it was discarded.

In the normal course of events, carbohydrates are the basis of energy for work and exercise, but with these fad diets, the carbs are no longer there, so the body starts to break down its stockpile of fat. This may seem beneficial but it is not necessarily so. The ketones resulting from the breakdown of fat are excreted via urine and often increased quantities of urine, which can cause dehydration. People with certain medical conditions have to be very careful too; diabetics, for example.

Fad diets are popular, but they can be very detrimental to your body and when they do not have the desired result in the long-term, it can be very depressing leading to comfort eating. This is why many people begin a fad diet, lose weight and are radiant for a month or two, but then slip back when they are approaching their ideal weight. They go back to their old ways and the weight begins to come back. They become depressed, certain that they will never be able to lose weight; they comfort eat some more, maybe giving up any hope of regaining a normal weight permanently.
