If you need nutrition advice, there are many resources available. Here are some quick tips regarding nutrition and carbohydrates specifically. Not all carbs are bad. There are actually certain kinds that are good, while others are the bad kind that you should avoid. There is a pattern to follow though so you can know when a food might be the bad kind of carbs, and when it might be good. Do not forget when planning your diet, however that exercise is important. A list of good carbohydrate foods is a smart thing to keep on you or at least in your head.

Good carbohydrates are found in healthy foods. Some of these desirable foods are lightly cooked or raw vegetables and whole fruits (either frozen or fresh). Nuts, seeds and beans contain good carbohydrates. High fiber and whole grain foods are good as well.

Your bad carbohydrates will come, not surprisingly, from unhealthy foods like candy, soda, bakery products, pudding, cookies, or other sweets. These foods contain the bad carbs that you should avoid, among many other unhealthy additives.

One of the best ways to know if the carbohydrates are good or bad is to consider how processed and how artificial the food in question is. Processed and refined grains, like white rice, are bad carbohydrates. This kind of processing removes the nutrients and fiber, making these foods empty.

No matter how well you eat though, remember that you must also exercise. Your diet should be well planned, but it will not have nearly as much of an effect on your health if you do not couple it with plenty of regular exercise.

Omega-3 Efas and Heart Problems

DHA supplements are certainly something you need to consider, if you’re interested in avoiding cardiovascular disease. DHA is short for docosahexaenoic acid, and it’s one of the many omega-3 essential fatty acids. Omega-3′s are essential to good heath. Although DHA is the most prevalent fatty acid in the brain, it’s also seen to play a large roll in avoiding cardiovascular disease. Not only DHA plays this roll, but all omega-3 fatty acids are important when it concerns your heart health.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids and Cholesterol

One diet that is high in omega-3′s is the Mediterranean diet. Those who follow this diet generally have high HDL, or “good” cholesterol. One reason is the Mediterranean diet has a fair amount of fish in it. This is further backed up by the fact that Eskimos also generally have high HDL cholesterol. They also consume a lot of cold water, fatty fish. These fish tend to be extremely high in omega-3 essential fatty acids. You might not wish to eat halibut or tuna every day, but you can take fish-oil supplements. Numerous studies have shown that these supplements reduce triglyceride levels. In addition to fish, walnuts are recognized to be high in omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Blood Pressure

There have been several studies which have shown that diets high in omega-3′s or even fish-oil supplements, can lower high blood pressure. You don’t want to self-medicate, however. High Blood Pressure is a serious condition. Make sure you get your doctor’s approval before you do one thing.

Coronary Disease and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

It’s been shown time and time again that diets low in unhealthy fats and high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (including omega-3 efas) help prevent cardiovascular disease. There is a lot of clinial evidence that fish-oil, which is high in EPA and DHA (two types of omega-3 efas) help reduce instances of cardiovascular disease and cardiac arrest. In addition, fish-oil has been proven to have a relatively positive effect on lowering triglycerides, risk of death from coronary disease, stroke, and abnormal heart rhythms. Fish-oil has also been shown to help mitigate and treat hardening of the arteries through slowing the development of plaque and blood clots.

In other words, fish-oil, which contains considerable amounts of EPA and DHA, is really useful to you. Since with DHA you get a double whammy effect of helping your heart and brain, you probably want to consider DHA supplements in what you eat. As in all things medical, confer with your doctor first.

A History of Mexican Tortillas

The word “tortillas” originates from the Spanish word “torta,” meaning round cake. Tortillas are very popular in Mexico and also in the United States. Americans like to be imaginative when it comes to preparing their tortillas and combinations such as beans and meat, apple, cinnamon and sugar or peanut butter and jelly are favorites. Flour tortillas are also used to make sandwiches, casseroles and stews, hot dogs and there are plenty more uses too. You can even make homemade tortillas, since the recipe is quite straightforward.

Tortillas have been used for thousands of years but without the exotic, imaginative flavors and fillings of today.

Tortilla history tells us that the Aztecs were making flour tortillas over 10,000 years before Christ. They ate a lot of corn, either direct from the cob or used as an ingredient in another recipe. The Aztecs would grind the corn into cornmeal and make corn dough, or masa, out of it. This was done by mixing the cornmeal with water, which had to be exactly the right temperature; else, it would be the wrong consistency to make a dough. When the masa was ready, the Aztecs would shape it into a ball and then flatten it into a type of thick pancake. When it was the right size and thickness, the masa dough would have been placed on a hot griddle and cooked quickly.

The tortillas of today are still made with the same ingredients as in tortilla history. Because they are very popular, most tortillas today are made in factories with machinery. They come in a lot of different flavors and you can also make homemade tortillas quite easily. A lot of Mexican foods use tortillas as an ingredient. Tacos, for example, use flour tortillas as the shell. With an enchilada, the tortilla is filled, then rolled up, and cooked. Tortillas are used as turnovers to make quesadillas, which are filled before being fried.

Tortillas are not just for eating. “Tortilla art” is when tortillas are used as a canvas. They are baked and then covered in acrylic, before they are painted. The culture of Latino artists is represented by tortilla art so this is an important part of tortilla history.

Tortilla chips are also made from tortillas. The tortilla is fried after being cut into wedges. The ingredients in corn tortillas are corn, salt, water, and vegetable oil. These tortilla chips first gained popularity in the 1940s in Los Angeles, California. These chips were mass-produced there but are still known as Mexican food.

Americans like to use tortillas in various dishes. They are commonly used in burritos, which originated in northern Mexico many years ago. Many people from the north of Mexico and the Native Mexicans in the southwestern United States eat tortillas as a food staple. Many restaurants use flour tortillas in a variety of non-Mexican and Mexican recipes. Nearly every grocery store has tortillas and you can also make homemade tortillas and experiment with the ingredients and fillings.

Mexican Churros – The Hot, Fried Snacks

Churros originated in Spain and were then introduced to Mexico. They are fried cookies, made from a light, sweetened paste. This paste is piped into hot oil and fried until it goes a golden brown color. For a sweeter taste, cinnamon is often added. Churros are delicious eaten warm and street venders make them on the street and sell them there.

It used to be hard to find churros outside of Hispanic areas a few decades ago because they were only available at sporting events and carnivals. Nowadays they are easy to find in Mexican grocery stores and local restaurants because Latin food is becoming increasingly popular with many nationalities. Some companies manufacture churros with an inner filling in a delicious flavor such as chocolate, strawberry, or apple. Many Americans have discovered the wonderful flavor of churros.

There are many types of Mexican cookie recipes. If you are new to these types, you might want to visit a local Mexican grocery store and try a few that are fresh from their bakery. We eat foods with vitamins to help our bodies to function properly. Taking vitamin and minerals has many benefits for our body, such as the positive effect they have on the body organs and functions. This is all true with that ever-popular well-known Vitamin D. Vitamin D has long been important for the many excellent things it does for our bodies. As important as Vitamin D is for our body and overall health, there are some concerns taking Vitamin D, as well as other vitamins, in excess or not in accordance with the recommended guidelines.

More is not always Better

We’ve all heard the saying, ‘there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing’. Although we don’t always think in terms of vitamins when we hear that phrase, it can certainly apply to vitamins and Vitamin D. Because vitamin D is necessary and good for us, we find it hard to imagine that taking too much of this vitamin can be harmful. However, taking too much of this vitamin can cause serious side effects. Some symptoms of too much Vitamin D, or possible Vitamin D overdose, are loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, constipation and abdominal pain. Vitamin D overdose can also lead to hypercalcemia, a medical condition where there are abnormally high levels of calcium compounds in our bloodstream. Liver damage is another possibility that could occur from too much Vitamin D. Some people mistakenly believe if they take twice the recommended amount of Vitamin D, that they will get twice the benefits of what they’d get with the normal dosage. This idea is not only incorrect but can be dangerous to your health.

Eat High Quality Vitamin D rich foods

Many foods are rich in Vitamin D, allowing us not to have to take Vitamin D supplements. However, the quality of the Vitamin D foods has a bearing on the benefits we’ll get from them. In many cases, generic foods are as good as name brand foods. It is important to read the labels on the back of the food items to educate yourself on what you’re eating. In the case of fresh fruit and vegetables, it’s important to eat high quality food. Food that is in the “bargain bin” because it’s old may still be edible, but a lot of the vitamins and minerals have been lost. The same is true with the expiration dates on products such as milk. The foods that will last the longest generally are the ones with the highest Vitamin D levels.
