At first, the gas oven was used for commercial purposes. Cooks at home wanted a version available for them to use in their own kitchen. The smaller appliance was created and since then modifications have continued to be made. At home people could heat up food directly or via intermediary stone cookware.
The old version has a gas pilot that is constantly burning the gas flame under the cook top. When the stove is turned on, the flame lights the gas flowing to the burners. The drawback is that the pilot is always consuming fuel even when the oven is not in use.
Electric ignition models use an electric spark to ignite the burners. There will be a clicking sound just before the burner actually lights up. The benefit to this model is that the fuel is only being used when turned on. With either type, the flames should burn blue, which means it is getting the proper mix of gas and air. If it is yellow, the owner or a professional should clean the burners.
Some versions have one compartment where all the baking or grilling is done. On others there will be two compartments. One for baking only and the other utilized for all other cooking needs.
A new appliance should last over twenty years. Because of its long life, it is important to know that it is also fuel efficient. The gas runs directly into the house and to the appliance without being converted from some other form of fossil fuel.
Cooking on gas does introduce some dangerous byproducts into the home. These are carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and nitrogen-dioxide. For this reason proper ventilation above the appliance should be installed and in good working order.
When a person starts shopping for a new or used gas oven, consider the amount of available space in the kitchen. Do they want one that is self cleaning or requires manual cleaning? Is it in their price range? Always try to stick with a manufacture that offers a warranty.
