About 80% of the Acai fruit is made up of the seed, the fruit as a whole is about one inch in diameter and is very small. The berry is usually purple but sometimes the berry is green. While the berry is very healthy the seed offers no nutritional value and is often used for livestock feed or top soil.

This is what is what ends up in the various food items such as juices, yogurts, and ice creams as well as being sold dried or frozen. Why is the Acai Berry a Superfruit?

If you are looking for something healthy to eat, then the acai berry may have something wonderful to interest you. Over the past years, the acai berry has gone from pretty much unknown to very popular within a very short period of time. People are already taking vitamins and food supplements and they welcome a natural alternative that may do the job as well or even better.

Nowadays, most people have heard of the term antioxidants and free radicals. The acai berry is high in antioxidants that are effective in fighting free radicals especially peoxynitrite free radicals. Some scientists say that the acai berry has the highest amount of antioxidants when compared to other fruits but the jury is still out on that fact. No matter which fruit has the highest level of antioxidants, the acai berry is no doubt one of the top performers.

You may have heard the term anthocyanins. The acai berry has a large amount of anthocyanins in it. The main anthocyanins in the acai berry are cyanidin-3-glucoside or C-3-G and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. These are just two potent antioxidants in the acai berry. There are more antioxidants present which makes the acai berry a good source for fighting again many types of free radicals.

Many people take supplements that contain essential fatty acids. The acai berry is good source of essential fatty acids. The acai berry is a small berry but about 50 percent or more of its dry weight is fat. If you were to extract oil from the acai berry, then you will find that the acai berry’s fat is about 60 percent monounsaturated and 13 percent polyunsaturated. This makes the fatty acids profile of the acai berry similar to that of olive oil.

Protein is very important in your diet. Unlike other fruits, the acai berry is high in protein. The acai berry’s protein profile is similar to an egg. But, bear in mind that the protein content can vary from an acai berry to another. Some acai palm trees bear acai fruits that have higher protein content than others depending on the condition which the trees grow in.

When talking about the nutritional profile of the acai berry, you cannot forget that the acai berry has a lot of vitamins in it. There are many vitamins including vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C and E. The acai berry pulp is where most of the vitamins are. This is why, when choosing an acai juice, you should look for one with the acai pulp in it, not a pulp free one. When drinking the acai juice, you will have most of the vitamins that your body needs.

It is not surprising that people eating the acai berry or drinking the acai berry juice can stay healthy and strong. The acai berry is packed full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals as well as fiber and everything else that we have already discussed. You will find that you have lots of energy when eating the acai berry. The berry is also low in sugar which makes it even healthier.

The Proper Way to Preserve Acai Berries

Most people like to eat their fruits fresh but it may not be an option when it comes to acai berries. While most fruits last days or even weeks, acai berries only last a very short while. The acai berry deteriorates fast after picking than any other fruit on record. In fact, acai juice can only last up to 24 hours in a refrigerator before it’s many nutrients start to dwindle.

Since acai berries do not last long at all, it is hard to transport them anywhere far. That means, something needs to be done to the acai berries before they can be transported to be sold elsewhere other than near the rain forest regions in Brazil or wherever else the acai palm trees grow.

There are many challenges that manufacturers face when trying to preserve and process acai berries. The cost can be high and any slight drop in quality control could mean the whole batch of acai berries will be worthless. Once acai berries are picked by the locals, they are quickly transported to be processed to avoid any risks of microbial contamination.

Not only do manufacturers need to consider how to preserve acai berries so that they will not become rotten during shipment, they also need to think of ways that will preserve the nutrients in the berries as much as possible. Many of the processes done to the berries destroy the nutrients in them. If this is allowed to happen, then there is no good reason for anyone to reach out to buy any acai berry products and pay a lot of money for them. All to often this is the case.

At first glance, freezing acai berries seem like a natural choice, just like freezing other fruits. However, the acai berry is different from most other fruits and a slight drop of temperature during the shipping or storage process can totally make the frozen acai berries incomsumable by the time they arrive at their wholesale destinations, such as in the United States. This makes freezing the acai berry and shipping it costly and also risky.

Some companies have developed powder-based acai capsules and tablets, therefore making the acai berries’ nutrients last longer. However, there are concerns that the nutritional content of these derivative acai berry products may not contain many nutrients at all. The quality of the products is likely to be very low. Taking acai pills and tablets cannot compare to eating fresh acai berries or drinking most of the acai berry juices around.

There are more complicated ways to preserve and process the acai berries such as the freeze drying process that is supposed to be the best. The freeze drying process is done in a vacuum which is beneficial for limiting the activity of enzymes that would otherwise make the acai berries go bad quickly.

The moral of this story is that while acai berries have lots of nutrients in them, the acai berry products that you find may not contain many nutrients at all. You have to pay attention to how the acai berry is processed in order to find out if a product is really good for you. If the product is not nutritious, then there is obviously no point paying a premium price for it.
